Ady

Ady recently hit her 3 year mark of doing CrossFit and she brought in chocolate covered strawberries to share with the class she was attending. She wanted to say thank you for everything that CFCP has done for her. Ady is the one who put in the work and made the changes, she has been consistent in our evening classes and has done some personal training sessions. She loves her nutrition program that has helped her hit many of her goals.  Thank you Ady, you are a amazing person and we love having you as a part of our CFCP family!

How long have you been CrossFitting?

Since August 1, 2014

Favorite Exercise or (WOD) Workout of Day?

I have grown to love Murph...not only for the physical challenge, but the mental challenge, as well.  I also love any WODs that are primarily leg work...cleans, squats, box jumps.

Least favorite exercise or (WOD) Workout of Day?

I seriously hate snatches!  Yes...I know what that means...I need to practice them more often.

Whats the biggest improvement in your CrossFit game that you have seen?

Everything!  Stamina, strength, changes in body composition, and definitely confidence to know that I can push myself further than the day before.

What's the biggest lifestyle/behavioral/health improvement have you seen from CrossFit?

There isn't enough room on this page for me to answer this question, so to be concise, CrossFit has completely changed my life in every aspect.  I am physically healthier than ever before and much more confident to know that I can take on any challenge that is placed before me.  I never thought I would become addicted to lifting weights and to the high intensity type of workouts we do, especially when I started Crossfit at age 51. I was also exposed to a different way of eating for performance and meal planning that has been life-changing, to say the least!

Coolest place you've ever CrossFitted?

CFCP, of course!  I also did a competition at Level 10 Crossfit in Oroville, which was a wonderful gym, with a great view.

Future CrossFit goals?

I'd like to do more competitions and get to
the point where I can compete in the Intermediate Level.  I also want to be able to RX all of the Open WODs.

Future life goals not related to CrossFit?

Travel, travel, travel and retire or go from full-time to part-time at my job within the next 3 years.

What's your favorite part being a part of CrossFit Cameron Park?

This may sound cheesy, but the reason I keep coming back is because of the people and the supportive community.  CFCP has become my family and for that, I'm grateful!

Fernando

Fernando was one of our very first athletes, he is in our facebook photo
albums from 2010  and  2011 in some of the last workouts we did in our garage and some of the first work outs we did in a warehouse. Fern quickly became one of our strongest guys but has always been one of the best members of our community. He has taken some breaks from Crossfit but has been consistent as anyone lately. He always has a positive attitude and a smile on his face. I asked Jordon about having Fernando in his 9:00 class.  "He is an all around amazing person to be around, he is a hard worker that is crazy strong."

Liza

Name: Liza Reed

Age: 38

Occupation: Mother

Hometown: Shingle Springs, CA

Favorite WOD: Any one that leaves me sweaty but not puking...

Least favorite WOD: The puking kind.

Favorite lift: I have a love/hate relationship with snatches.  The snatch has taken the longest for me to learn but when I do one that feels right, it is the most satisfying.

How long have you been Crossfitting? 3 years

Which class time do you usually attend?  The 9:06.

How did you find Crossfit? Marta kept telling me about how awesome Crossfit is and then starting acquainting me with some of the movements.  Finally I worked up the courage to sign-up.

What is your athletic background?  I played tennis competitively, and did cross country and played ultimate frisbee.  I love pick up sports, I love competing, and I love long swims in the ocean.

Has Crossfit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?  Absolutely!  I was so resistant to spending the time and money for myself at first but realized I was probably just intimidated.  I came into crossfit not able to do one sit up and never thinking I would ever do a full pull-up ( I was the chubby girl who could barely hold her head above the bar in elementary school.)  Showing up and being accountable to my body, challenging it and being good to it was an amazing feeling.  I could wax poetic for a long time about what I have taken away from my crossfit experience, but one mantra I bring into my day with me is  "just do the next rep", don’t think about the next round or the next movement or the next moment, do the next rep. One rep at a time.  Life is often times hugely overwhelming and this reminds me to stay in the moment.  Also, I often remind myself to “just show up”  I don’t have to be a hero or conquer a new movement or get a PR.  Just show up and move.

What motivates/inspires you?  I am deeply inspired by the courage of people who are out of shape that start that journey towards health and self-care.  It is not easy to take that risk and step out of your comfort zone.

Name one goal/personal achievement that you would like to achieve through Crossfit:  Being disciplined about mobility and movements that complement my strength training.

Hobbies/interests outside of Crossfit? Gardening, birding, herding kids and animals.

What were your thoughts after your first CrossFit experience?  I was super overwhelmed with all the new lingo, the names of the movements etc.  For months or maybe a year I would get butterflies in my stomach on my way to the gym because I wondered if I was going to be able to make it through the WOD.

What is your favorite cheat food? Any kind of chips and also bourbon.

Tell us something about you that most people wouldn’t know: I work with the homeless population of El Dorado County.

Any advice for new members? Come as you are. Don’t compare yourself to others. Don’t look at the WOD until 5 min before you do it.  Stressing won’t get it done.

Carolyn

Name:  Carolyn Straight

Age: Older than most people think ; ) (51)

Occupation: A Mom and everything that comes with that (doctor, chauffeur, bank, chef, alarm clock, you get the picture.)

Hometown: Shingle Springs, at the moment, but that can change.

Favorite WOD: I like Murph (except for the run.)  I also like finding our CrossFit totals.

Least favorite WOD: Anything that involves wall balls, burpees, running or box jumps.

Favorite lift:  Snatch, baby! Still need a lot of work on them, but like doing them, even when I land on my butt. :)

How long have you been Crossfitting? Since the garage days! I believe that would be five years, right Scott?

Which class time do you usually attend? Late morning class: 9 am. Love my morning peeps.

How did you find Crossfit?  7+ years ago, my husband did it in our home garage with friends.  They continued for a few years as I listened to the clanging and banging in my garage, thinking they were crazy.  I would faithfully attend my HIIT classes and run on the treadmill at the local global gym. A few years later, my friend convinced me to try CrossFit.  I loved it, trading in my gym membership for a CF Box.

What is your athletic background? I played team sports in elementary school, but wasn't very good.  In college I took a weightlifting class and discovered how much I enjoyed it.  As an adult, I also discovered swimming and road cycling.

Has Crossfit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?   Yes, yes, yes! CrossFit allows me to do all the other fun stuff: backpacking, hiking, kayaking, cycling, occasional skiing and my favorite, eating...a lot of eating.

What motivates/inspires you? My faith, my family, my friends...and not looking at the WOD before arriving to class.

Name one goal/personal achievement that you would like to achieve through Crossfit: I want to be consistent with my double unders. I also want to walk into retirement age strong, healthy and with full mobility so I can continue enjoying the great outdoors.

Hobbies/interests outside of Crossfit? Outdoor fun.  I love the mountains and the beach and am always looking for an adventure and/or road trip.

What were your thoughts after your first CrossFit experience? I'm gonna die...why am I paying to torture myself..I love this...I can't get enough (well, I only think that after I've finished the WOD, refueled, rested and forgotten about the pain.)

What is your favorite cheat food? Buckets of ice cream topped with caramel, copious amounts of whipped cream and nuts (my tummy isn't too sure about that one.)

Tell us something about you that most people wouldn’t know: At one point in my life I weighed over 190 pounds.

Any advice for new members?  Stick with it. We all have to start somewhere.  You may feel like it is too hard, but don't give up.  As you continue, you will see and feel the improvement.  It is always a challenge, but if it ever becomes easy, then you aren't going to see or feel the results. Try to workout at least three times a week and eat clean.  It's worth the time and effort if you want results.

Has Crossfit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?   Absolutely! I'm in better shape at 36 than I have ever been. Crossfit makes me feel good inside and out! I am physically and mentally stronger from it! I am constantly moving wether it be hiking, Crossfit or farm chores, it has made me able to conquer it all! I keep getting stronger there is no cap.

What motivates/inspires you? My Crossfit family definitely motivates as well as the changes I see in my body. People that have a love for life and being healthy with a positive attitude inspire me.

Name one goal/personal achievement that you would like to achieve through Crossfit: I would like to someday be able to do a bar muscle up, I won't quit until it happens!

Hobbies/interests outside of Crossfit? I love to hike, be outdoors, ride horses and play with our goats.

What were your thoughts after your first CrossFit experience? Um I was really sore, but I thought it was awesome and totally for me because it was fun and not boring at all.

What is your favorite cheat food?   Definitely Chinese.

Tell us something about you that most people wouldn’t know:   Deathly afraid of heights and snakes 🐍

Any advice for new members? Push through the initial discomfort take it slow one step at a time you will be greatly rewarded if you stick with it!

Scott Walker

Age: 59

Occupation:
Environmental Engineer- semi-retired

Hometown: Cameron Park

Favorite WOD:
Murph- challenging but not complicated and a great workout.

Least favorite WOD:
Anything I need much more progression on and have to significantly scale back (e.g., doubles unders, chest to bar pullups, toes to bar, muscle ups)

Favorite lift:
Clean and Jerk- not my best but powerful and involves the most muscle groups.

How long have you been Crossfitting?
2 years

Which class time do you usually attend?
4 days a week; 9 am MF; 8 or 9 TTH; sometimes 9 Sat

How did you find Crossfit?
From Megan at Dog Park

What is your athletic background?
Moderate runner 10-12 miles per week; swim 1-mile in summer up to 2 days a week; hiking and backpacking; Little if any weight lifting, gymnastics, or team sports.

Has Crossfit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?
Absolutely! After 55 I noticed a significant decline, increase in weight and flabbiness, and lost strength even noticed just working around the yard.  Also, my doctor was hassling me to start cholesterol meds and lose weight.  Started some initial high intensity workouts at home with dumbells and had some gains but got bored and needed more.  I got hooked early on Crossfit and just after a few months my waist dropped a few inches and cholesterol went down to desired levels without medication. My weight is not down by much but it has redistributed itself into muscle and my body fat is low for my age.  I initially had problems with my shoulders but have largely worked through it and continue to progress although shoulder mobility and strength is my biggest weakness.

What motivates/inspires you?
Being challenged and competing against myself to improve.  Also the community feeling and great mix of genders, age groups, and levels of fitness of my workout partners.

Name one goal/personal achievement that you would like to achieve through Crossfit:
As close as possible to the Crossfit Cameron Park male equivalent to Janice.  That is a tall order but maybe start with top 50 in my NorCal age group at the next open.

Hobbies/interests outside of Crossfit?
Volunteer Wilderness Ranger- Desolation Wilderness; Hiking, backpacking, skiing, snowshoeing

What were your thoughts after your first CrossFit experience?
I initially felt anxious and intimidated but felt great with all the encouragement and support.

What is your favorite cheat food?
Pizza

Tell us something about you that most people wouldn’t know:
As a former exploration geologist I once got stuck in the snow in Eastern Nevada and got frostbite in my feet. Every 6 months or so I still would get nerve pain and be flat out for a few days to a week. Started to feel it coming on once a year ago but it was slight and went away in a day.  I think the workouts are curing it.

Any advice for new members?
Anybody can benefit physically and mentally from Crossfit no matter the age or level of fitness.  Be patient and scale it back if you need to, especially at first.  Feel good about progressing no matter how incremental. You will also have good days and not so good days but the good days will prevail.

Damon

Name: Damon Le Roy

Age: 40

Occupation: Information Security

Hometown: San Luis Obispo, CA

How did you find Crossfit?
I don't remember, I had read about it online and a friend from college did it. I found the website for CFCP but it was over a year before I had the courage to contact Scott to try it.

What is your athletic background?
Wrestling in high school, kegstands in college, desk jockey ever since.

Which class time do you usually attend?
All of them except 5am. My work schedule is highly variable, I make time when I can. It's also great to go to classes run by different coaches. The small differences in the feedback I get from each really helps me understand what they're all seeing but I'm not feeling. This has been a big help for me on complicated movements.

When did you start CrossFit?
Spring 2015

What are your goals in CrossFit?
Increase strength with proper form. If I had to choose between form and strength, I'd choose form because injury sucks.

If you could have one superpower what would it be and why?
Incinerate objects at will by looking at them, because drones piss me off.

Share two things you are working on inside the gym.
Snatch, squat

Share two things you are working on outside of the gym.

Lower back mobility. Ocular incineration.

What's the biggest lifestyle/behavioural/health improvement have you seen from CrossFit?
For the few years leading up to starting CrossFit I had lower back pain due to inactive lifestyle and my long-hours desk job. With Scott's help and self education I have learned how to heal my back and prevent future injury. It used to take me over 5 painful minutes just to get my socks on in the morning. I now have better posture, mobility, strength and am pain free. If this were the only benefit from CrossFit it would still be worth it to me. There are many other benefits too, like being the last of my friends to wear out when we spend 9hrs loading and hauling firewood.

Coolest place you've ever CrossFitted?
CrossFit Cameron Park! I love the new location.

What is your favorite healthy meal?
Cobb Salad with no olives. I can't believe people think those briny black vomit makers are food.

What is your favorite cheat meal/snack?
Spinach. I usually stick to a high protein, high fat, high carb diet, but sometimes I crave a big ball of spinach that squeaks when I chew it.

What advice would you give someone who is hesitant to try CrossFit?

It's only intimidating at first. This is an a-hole free gym.

Now that you’ve been doing CrossFit, what’s one thing you could never see yourself doing again?  (workout, nutrition, lifestyle, etc.)
Squatting in running shoes.

If you could master one skill you don’t have right now, what would it be and why?
Ring muscle ups. Because I want to get them before Megan.

Favorite music/song to CrossFit to?
Short WODs: Dragonforce, Operation Ground and Pound.
Long WODs: It doesn't matter, I'm too deep in the pain cave to hear anything.

Do you have a favorite WOD or movement?
Whatever I've just finished.

Tell us something that we don’t know about you.
I have three thumbs.
